"Black and White Collage"

magazine paper on Bristol board, 14 x 17 inches

Class: Color Theory (Fall 2020)

Instructor: Val Sivilli

This piece was one of the first assignments from my color theory class. We were required to duplicate a black and white photograph using black and white magazine paper. The photo I ended up using was of a flower. It was not too detailed, but it still had a good variety of darks and lights. The challenging part of this assignment was trying to find the correct intervals of gray. It might seem like you have the correct gray when in reality you need one that is 10 percent lighter. It was interesting to see just how expansive the grayscale really is and I believe that doing this project in black and white was necessary before working in full color. It trained my eye to look for subtle changes in value that I might have otherwise missed if it were not for this assignment. Once I had the correct gray values, putting the flower together was fairly easy. It was a little hard gluing down some of the smaller pieces, but I was able to complete it and I am very pleased with the end result.
