BEST IN SHOW: GRAPHIC DESIGN

Ana Carolina Mitchell

"Bauhaus: History of Graphic Design"

InDesign & Photoshop, 18 x 32 inches

Class: Visual Design 1 (Spring 2020)

Instructor: Darren McManus

My Bauhaus project was one component of a class-wide assignment wherein each student designed a layout from a different period/movement from the history of design. I must say that I was very excited to have randomly ended up with the Bauhaus because as a design student, I’m always trying to learn different techniques to create results that will ease the viewer’s understanding and use of it. So, developing a project about the Bauhaus was a fantastic learning opportunity because it was such a transformational period focused on formal simplicity and functionality. In addition, the Bauhaus philosophy has influenced the way we learn and create design to this day, so developing a project about this pivotal moment in Modernism gave me the feeling of completing a cycle.

The fact that I had to develop the project during the last three weeks of the semester when we were forced back to remote learning was the most challenging part of the project. In terms of the "making" aspect, I had to ensure that my design was visually interesting and functional - exactly what Bauhaus design is all about! I used the picture plane wisely by breaking it up into a grid system, allowing me to strategically implement the required amount of text and images throughout the composition while creating visual balance. I’m very happy with the outcome, and even more appreciative of all the positive contributions that the Bauhaus brought into the world of art and design.
