When I was assigned a photo series project after the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic, it seemed only fitting to draw inspiration from the strange situation we were all experiencing. I stumbled upon an old dollhouse in my attic and realized it was perfect for creating my own diorama. Usually, when someone thinks of a dollhouse, they think of the perfect home: every room decorated just right and a happy little family to inhabit it. No one ever thinks Barbie is going to have to deal with a global pandemic, right? I wanted to make my dollhouse more real. “Dollhouse Quarantine” was my way of finding humor in all of the anxiety and absurdity that was happening around me. Usually, I like to focus on the beauty of things in my photography, however, for this particular project it felt right to focus on the not-so-beautiful. It made me see that some of the greatest inspiration for creating art comes from real life - as dismal and unfortunate as it may be. It also goes to show that if Barbie can deal with isolation-induced insanity and manage wearing a mask, we all can.
